V5 Bridge Rehabilitation
Mesa County Road 45 is the main connection from I-70 to the town of DeBeque. The existing bridge was
slightly over 400’ from abutment to abutment. The bridge was configured with four spans of precast concrete double tee girders and two spans of steel plate girders. The precast girders were showing signs of advanced distress. The County requested a design to remove and replace the existing precast concrete girders and to reuse the existing steel plate girders. LONCO’s preliminary design suggested widening the bridge in addition to the required design elements. The resulting configuration utilized four spans of steel plate girders (two existing and two new). The project was complicated by the existing waterline hanging from the bridge. While the bridge could be closed to traffic, the waterline had to remain in service. The resulting cross-section allowed a wider roadway to accommodate the heavy truck traffic accessing the oil and gas fields, as well as a wider sidewalk for improved pedestrian access.
