Tri-State Tollway Structure Inspection and Rehabilitation

Tri-State Tollway Structure Inspection and Rehabilitation

LONCO, Inc. was responsible for the inspection, determination of repair needs and preparation of construction documents for Ramps B & D of the Tri-State Tollway Interchange with the North-West Tollway (I-90). Ramps B & D are the high level (3rd Level) ramps that carry Northbound and Southbound Tri-State Tollway traffic to Eastbound and Westbound I-90 respectively. The two ramp structures comprise a total of 38 spans and the majority of the spans (32 spans) are constructed of Precast Prestressed Concrete I Girders, with six “long” spans carrying the ramp traffic on a welded plate girder, two-girder system with floor beams.

This work is still underway with proposed structure improvements including the determination of deck repair needs, complete deck replacement, installation of new bridge beams, repair of existing bridge beams, repair of abutments, repair and/or reconstruction of existing piers, cleaning and painting of bearings, replacing of bearings, repair of pier columns and caps, repair of bearing pedestals, cleaning bridge seats, cleaning and painting of structural steel and replacement of slope walls.

Repairs are based upon field inspections performed by LONCO, Inc and past inspection reports provided by ISTHA. Ground Penetrating Radar testing was completed of the bridge deck to obtain detailed delamination information for the top portions of the bridge deck, while field staff inspected the bottom of the bridge deck. A Concept Report, complete with all scope of work recommendations and estimates of cost for construction are being prepared and submitted to the ISTHA for review prior to commencing the development of the contract documents.
