47th Avenue Bridge Replacement

47th Avenue Bridge Replacement

The existing bridge was constructed in 1973, using prestressed concrete single tee girders. The concrete deck had seen considerable deterioration and was too narrow. Therefore, the City and County of Denver decided to replace the structure. The site presented a number of challenges, which included the location of intersecting roadways in close proximity to each end of the bridge. The existing structure was hydraulically inadequate but the location of the intersections limited the amount of grade change that could be utilized to raise the bridge low chord.

LONCO, Inc. provided complete design services for a three-span structure using side-by-side precast concrete boxes to minimize structure depth, and maximize hydraulic opening, while meeting the existing grade requirements. The City had an easement for the bridge through CDOT ROW. Since the project was located on CDOT ROW a utility/special use permit was required. To obtain this permit an extensive environmental assessment was required in addition to the typical requirements for obtaining a 404 permit. LONCO and Pinyon Environmental jointly developed the stormwater management plan for the project.
