29 Road Bridge

29 Road Bridge

This project for Mesa County provided a much-needed access over the Colorado River from the Orchard Mesa Community to the Grand Junction business district, I-70 and surrounding communities. The largest project in Mesa County's Department of Public Works history required a major bridge structure, 807 feet in length, to connect 29 Road on either side of the river.

The longest spans are 160 feet, requiring steel plate girders over seven feet deep. There is a significant change in elevation (nearly 70 feet) between the north and south side of the river, which required the bridge deck to be designed at a steep 5.58% grade. LONCO included an automated anti-icing system with an on-site weather sensing station into the bridge, the first of its kind in Mesa County, to increase safety and reduce future maintenance costs. Weathering steel and integrally colored concrete was also used to reduce costs and minimize upkeep. With future accommodations of 20,000 cars per day, the 29 Road Bridge is a notable structure in the growing Grand Valley community.
