Historic Tramway Building - Denver Center for the Performing Arts
This project was an adaptive reuse of the old Denver Tramway Building. Originally constructed in 1911 as a maintenance building for the Tramway’s trolley system, the Tramway Building is a historic landmark in downtown Denver, Colorado. From 1911 to the 1950’s the building served as the central maintenance facility for the Denver Tramway system. In the 1960’s the building was modified for classroom use by the University of Colorado. This modification included the addition of a third floor to the original two-story structure. In 2003, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts wanted to increase the usable space of the building, and they asked LONCO to help by adding a fourth floor to the structure. LONCO worked to develop a plan for strengthening the existing structure enabling the addition of the fourth floor while still allowing the Denver Center to maintain operations. LONCO’s design allowed the Denver Center for the Performing Arts to save over $1.3M in construction cost on this $9.0M adaptive reuse project.
