Chicago Motor Speedway
The project required the coordination and completion of civil engineering plans, boundary and topographic surveys of an existing 80-acre site including the existing horseracing track, grandstands, horse barns and other related facilities. The existing site, which was an existing horseracing track, was renovated to be a-one-of-a-kind dual racing facility. Allowing horse racing during a portion of the year and high speed oval auto racing during the remainder of the year.
The project included preparation of contract documents for the demolition of the existing facilities and construction of a one-mile asphalt oval racing track with associated features. The racing facility included a 67,000-seat grandstand with capabilities for future expansion. Also included were concession areas, luxury suites, Hospitality Chalets, VIP Seating, Club Seating, and Motorhome facilities as well as the garage and racing facilities.
The design of storm sewers, sanitary sewers, domestic and fire water mains and services, site grading and drainage along with the design of the scoring, timing and media center, were the primary areas of responsibility for the LONCO team. Coordination with the local telecommunications and electrical service providers was also required.
The new designs required extensive coordination with Architects and other engineering disciplines, utility companies for water, sewer, gas and electric service as well as with the Town of Cicero and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Because this project needed to be expedited, coordination with the Program Manager and construction contractors was essential. Construction Administration duties included frequent on-site representation as well as responding to requests for information and reviewing submittals from contractors.
