1906 Arena at the National Western Stock Show Complex
LONCO, Inc. has participated in a number of projects to strengthen and preserve this 100 year old Denver landmark. Projects include restoration of the masonry parapets, analysis and strengthening of the existing roof structure, and repair and strengthening of the original seating structure. J.P. Illes, P.E. has been the Principal-in-Charge for all of the National Western projects.
Masonry Parapets - Due to inadequate ventilation in the roof structure, behind the parapets, condensation had caused the original mortar to decompose thus compromising the integrity of the structure. LONCO modified the roof design to insure that there would be adequate ventilation and then designed repairs to stabilize and strengthen the masonry parapets.
Strengthening Existing Roof Trusses - Due to thermal stresses there had been damage to the exterior masonry and the bottom chord of the original steel trusses. LONCO Engineers developed as-built drawings, analyzed the structure and developed details to repair and alleviate future problems with thermal stresses.
Strengthening of Original Seating Area - In the early 80's the arena area was modified to allow better access to the arena floor. In the process of making this modification new columns were added to frame wider openings to the arena floor. Theses columns were later found to be damaged and overstressed. LONCO Engineers analyzed the framing and designed the appropriate repairs.
