Hunting Hills Bridge & Pedestrian Underpass

Hunting Hills Bridge & Pedestrian Underpass

LONCO, Inc. provided design services for three structures in this Douglas County development. LONCO designed a concrete box culvert to carry the main access road to the development over the Highline Canal and an underpass culvert to carry the access road over the pedestrian path. This underpass was adjacent to the Highline Canal. An emergency vehicle access bridge was also required to cross the Highline Canal. The entry road that crosses the Highline Canal is a private road, but Denver Water, Douglas County, and the Highlands Ranch Metropolitan District had review authority. LONCO coordinate the project with Denver Water and Douglas County to make sure the requirements of each entity were met. Denver Water, in particular, had a number of unique requirements since the access bridge was over their canal. LONCO designed an 8-foot by 20-foot cast-in-place box for the main access road bridge. The pedestrian underpass was a 10-foot by 14-foot cast-in-place box. Retaining walls, up to 15-feet tall, were required to create the path grades required to access the underpass.

The emergency vehicle access bridge initially sought to utilize a former private driveway bridge to achieve this access requirement. LONCO investigated and rated the existing bridge, but it lacked capacity to support a fire truck. LONCO was able to retain the existing substructure while designing a new superstructure to reduce costs while achieving the project requirements. After a successful design phase, LONCO was also asked to provide construction support services for each structure.
