Access Control Plaza
This project consisted of a two-story 9,000 sq. ft. facility, with basement, that housed all collection booth operators, administrative staff and revenue collection facilities for DIA. There was direct communication linkage to the main terminal for security. The access plaza was built to serve 29 travel lanes and additional automated vehicle identification lanes. The administration building, collection booths and travelway canopy structures were built utilizing exposed structural steel and precast concrete elements. The administration building had controlled access due to the large sums of money that were stored there. The security and strength of the perimeter wall system, count room, and vault were also considered in the design. Detailed traffic analysis was performed using state of the art computer software to determine access plaza capacity, optimal queuing, timing and probable delays. All collection booths were connected by an underground tunnel, which allowed safe access to each booth. Pneumatic tubes were also installed in the tunnel to make and collect change between the administration facility and booths. One third of the toll collectors booths were fitted with elevators to accommodate handicapped employees access from the tunnel that runs under the pavement
